6 Outstanding Domestic Reds

The best of Wine Spectator - 10/31

6 Outstanding Domestic Reds While prices for premium Cabernet are really getting crazy, it is not to say that there aren’t any values out there. I found three great wines worth trying in the latest issue of Wine Spectator, and two are even from the Napa Valley.

Another pair of worthwhile wines both come from Washington State, and, not surprisingly, are Syrah. Syrah has had a tough time as of late, so there are some great values out there, and Washington is proving to be an ideal region for rich yet balanced examples from the New World.

    3/6 are washington syrah.
    4/6 are washington
    2/6 are napa cab blends
    interesting.
price of napa cab has gotten absurd. look at wine spectator - many (most?) are > $100.
there are still superb napa cabs for < $50. My old cut off was $40. its creeping up to $50.

  • I guess maybe I'm old-fashioned or something, but I still think that paying over $30 for a bottle of wine ought to get you a really, really, REALLY good wine. I mean, heck, it's a bottle of wine. It's gone in just a few minutes, fer cryin' out loud.

The fact is, although I appreciate fine wines, there are perfectly passable and delightfully tasty ones out there for less than $15. Sometimes, when you're lucky, MUCH less. Surely you've tried that Coppola Claret that comes in the little golden net, right? $13 at my local price club.

  • I know you are running out of topics, but these are hefty rather than fruity reds.

  • I have lived in he Napa Valley for over 34 years and was the owner of a very successful winery. Your web
site is much fun to read and I have learned much. However, who has the chutzpah to ask over 100 simoleans for a bottle of grape squeezins in this present economic climate?.
Keep up the great work. That's one of the joys of wines.....There's always something new to lpick up every day.

  • Thank you for including the '09 Ramey Claret, Napa Valley in your list. Just last week, our interns from Walla Walla, WA hosted a WA wine tasting to educate us on the flavors their state can produce. We all loved the '09 Gramercy Syrah (from Walla Walla) as well. Happy Holidays and thanks again!
