Austrian Gruner Veltliner Austrian Grüner Veltliner has been a staple around these parts since it was a hipster-only wine, these parts being the parts of Manhattan closest to Brooklyn, Brooklyn itself and the cool places south of 14th street in NYC.

Grüner has moved on to break out of the hipster box. Inexpensive quaffable liter bottles with crown caps helped lead the way, making the Austrian wine with the funny sounding name accessible to all.

So what’s with all the mega expensive examples? Don’t pull out the Euro exchange rate on me, there hasn’t been enough volatility there to explain away some pretty serious price jumps. Fortunately, there are still plenty of wines

We are introducing our QPR rating for these wines. It is a simple ranking dividing point score by price, offering you another way to compare wines.

  • Another amazing Gruner Veltliner I love is Nigl. For around $18 it really can't be beat. Wonderful floral notes, full expression mouth feel, and lingering soft balanced ending. It's such an outstanding value that I use it as my, "Go To" wine when it's sunny and beautiful out. Perfect for a wide range of food pairings, but it also stands on it's own with much higer priced wines. Certainly one of my favorite variatals. You will not be disappointed with this well balanced delicious white. Cheers!
