Where to go in July

Some of the Month's Best Wine Fairs

Summertime brings back memories of the freedom of youth; with not a care in the world as you pal around with friends, travel, and just enjoy life to the fullest. Being an adult wine geek, summer now means that and a whole lot more, for this is the time of year I personally celebrate life with white wines and roses, and red wines too in moderation. There’s  no need to kid amongst friends now is here, and with a relatively short season for the whites and roses in particular, this is the time of year to get out there and start trying as many wines as possible. To do that you need to hit the festivals my friends!

I've scoured the inter-webs to find the best events for July this year, and here, in no particular order, are the best of the lot! Let’s hope they’re pouring plenty of the light, fresh wines of summer.

California Wine Festival

The 10th annual California wine Festival will be held this year in beautiful Santa barbara California. Not that we need an excuse to visit Santa Barbara, but if we did this sure would be a doozy. This three day event features special tastings and a beach side grand tasting featuring great wineries such as Byron, Carol Shelton, Harney lane, clinker brick, and Vina Robles pouring some of their top current releases!

Finger Lakes Wine Festival

This is the big daddy of the new York's wine events, with over 80 local wineries participating along with great producers of New York State beer, art and music! Don't miss the many wen seminars, grand banquet, and, get this, pace car rides around the famous Watkins Glen race track! In addition to great wines from producers such as Standing Stone, Keuka Springs, and Hudson-Catham you'll find amazing local meats, cheeses, crafts and more all on offer at this three day extravaganza!

Horse Heaven Hills Trail Drive

We tend not to hear a lot about wine events in washington. I'm not sure if that's because they aren't happening or if they remain closely guarded secrets but here's one worth knowing about. The 8th annual Horse Heaven Hills Trail Drive Scholarship fundraiser, wine tasting & BBQ has an unwieldy name to be sure, but a noble purpose, supporting scholarships in viticulture and enology. Think about spending your day traveling through Washington's wine country with stops along the way at wineries like Columbia Crest, Canoe Ridge, and Chateau Champoux then ending the adventure with a great BBQ and live music at Crow Butte park on the scenic Columbia river!

Park City Food & Wine Classic

Park City Utah is famed for its winter activities but did you know there's a lot going on there during the summer as well? How about five days worth of fine wining and dining, all conveniently located around park City. This is a big event, with tons to do from Farm to table dinners to mountain bike rides, whiskey walks, and of course wine, and beer, tastings! With so many participating producers it's hard to formulate a plan of attack, but it's worth noting that mouth Veeder Winery, Jordan, David Arthur Vineyards, and Adelsheim Vineyards will al be there!

I'm not sure how you missed this one, but the International Pinot Noir Celebration is also held in McMinnville, Oregon in July. This is the 27th year, and it features some of the best Pinot Noir producers on the planet.

  • Absolutely agree with SteveKro. The IPNC is the best wine celebration out there. Good luck getting tickets this late, though. Maybe some tickets available for the salmon bake only.

Napa valley is always a hot place in the summer, and with our present sweltering heat wave, I am not sure I would visit Napa.

  • We want to plan a get together around wine tasting in September - maybe around the crush in California's Wine country (Napa, Sonoma, Paso Robles- can you recommend something a bit more interesting than the usual venues.

  • Wild Horse Winery in the Paso Robles area is a great location for wine tasting this month.
The area is replete with organic farm selling their home grown produce.
    Enjoy

Just opened and finished a Mont Saint Fort, Bordeaux 2005 that I have had for a while.
Beautiful flavor, bouquet, & fragrance. Have to dig in my wine closet and see if I have any other of the same bottles.
Didn't pay that much for it either.
