Where are the Values?

Where I’ll look for value over the coming months!

Where are the Values? I’ve just mapped out some of the tasting I plan on doing over the coming months. I actually get a fair number of medium and expensive samples, but not too many at the lower end of the pricing spectrum. In an effort to remedy that problem, and not being able to talk intelligently about value priced wines is in fact a big problem, I went shopping. The greatest fun a wine lover can have!

So what did I shop for? Where do I think values lay? What will I be writing about over the coming weeks? Here’s the short list.

Bordeaux, Garnacha, Sangiovese based blends, Syrah, Cotes du Rhone, and explorations into Southern Italy!

There are of course many more regions, and thinking back to my New Year’s resolutions, I’d love your input to help guide me towards my next value wine explorations. Please let me know where you think the values are, and why! Leave me a comment with your thoughts.

For today I’ll just leave you with my reasoning for starting with these wines, and an example or two of the values you can find.

  • I love finding fabulous inexpensive Malbec. But my first thought wasn't a varietal, but a location: Lake County. The area is still under appreciated and therefore underpriced. Much to consumers (my) benefit! Just an hour from Napa, in fact some of the grapes are going into those Napa wines. When I'm in the area I love to try a few wineries & stock my rack with affordable cabs, Syrah, and ZIN. Killer bottles from Gregory Graham, Obsidian Ridge, Chacewater, 6sigma, Shedhorn!

  • Glad to read that you are looking at affordable, everyday values. I would suggest including wines from Portugal and South America in your search.
