What We've Been Reading

Friuli and Pinot Noir on our minds

The reporting from Friuli by the COF2011 group is getting better and better. A group of wine writers is on the ground and visiting some of the most exciting properties in Friuli, all led by the intrepid and informed Jeremy Parzen. If you have not be following along, Jeremy Parzen, David McDuff, Samantha Dugan, Wayne Young, Alfonso Cevola, and Nicolas Contenta are blogging daily about their visits and experiences and it's a fascinating look at Colli Orientali del Friuli, a relatively undiscovered region.

Having so many different viewpoints, presenting the bloggers' own unique glimpes of their shared events is simply fascinating. This is a ground-breaking project and a style we will be seeing more of. If you want to see part of the future of wine journalism, this is it -- so don't miss it! Today, our friend David McDuff leads us through the group's visit to I Clivi. Taken by itself this is a great report, as part of the whole, it's even better.

Sirs, I signed up recently to Lot18 and expected to see reasonably good deals on some medium priced wine. Today I saw L'ecole 41 Wala Wala Cab "on Sale" for $44. They listed the retail price at $72. I checked Wine Spectator-the listed retail is $40 and the wine can be found on Wine-searcher for $29-34. Very misleading and I feel dishonest. I hope everyone becomes aware of this outrageous practice. Don Rohde sbuxdon@msn.com

Yeah this would all be good and fine if not for a couple of issues.

The first being that Snooth and Lot 18 are two distinct business so you should address your issues to them.

The next of course would be that this is selection of articles that has nothing to do with either lot 18 or the wine in question.

The third, and finale point, is that the lot 18 was for a pair of bottles, as the offer stated.

That makes the price $24.50 a bottle with the option of free shipping on a purchase of 4 or more bottles.

How does that compare with $29-34 per bottle?

  • I'd like to bring us back to Friuli. Fantastic wines there and I was thrilled to see a mention of Gianni and Lorena Petrussa. I too have enjoyed their hospitality and shared an excellent dinner, but what about their wines? The Schioppettino is fantastic and the Pinot Bianco made the meal memorable.
