It was just last week that I was describing Sonoma as a little wild, rustic, and pioneering, a small microcosm of what’s happening in California these days. Retaining that warm patina of days gone by, while continuing to reveal new treasures almost daily.

I should have saved that thought because it perfectly describes Sonoma’s own Don Sebastiani and his latest venture Don & Sons Marketplace. Recently Reviewed Wines from Don & Sons

Tons of fruit on the nose, full of cherries and strawberry with a little heathery/floral/herb/breakfast tea  smoky top notes.  Just a hint of leathery meatiness as well.  Silky, really nice upright texture in the mouth with a nice touch of soft tannin giving the wine nice richness.  This has just slightly noticeable residual sugar that really makes the strawberry fruit pop on the finish. A little spicy, strawberry seeds and even a hint of baking spice. Nicely done.

2008 Flock Monterey Pinot Noir

Super cool forest floor aromatics jump right out of the glass. This is unmistakably Pinot Noir, full of lightly jammy red fruits, edged with sweet wood tones, but with herbal tones that really add depth and dimension. Nicely balanced in the mouth with good clear fruit tones that are nice and bright with layered forest floor, red raspberry and light vanilla tones. This is quite light bodied, bright with soft tannins and a easy drinking balance. The finish is surprisingly long with the fine interplay between ripe fruit and sprightly herbal nuances.

2006 Aquinas Napa Valley Reserve

A classic Bordeaux blend of 50% Merlot, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Malbec, 5% Petite Sirah, 3% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot. A big nose with toasty oak, spiced black fruits with a bit of x-mass plum pudding character. With air this shows some Merlot cocoa and cab fennel/licorice herbaciousness but just a fine accent. This is medium bodied with really bright acidity that is well covered buy the rich, dark fruits. The tannins are not aggressive but are slightly austere with toasty oak notes and a hint of coconut adding depth to the mid-palate. There's a lot of bright red cherry, red plum character on the backend. Nicely balanced, a bit of espresso over lightly candied red fruits on the finish then red fruits with a hint of sharp acid and a suggestion of herb on the finale.  Almost plush, nicely structured, good depth and persistence.
