Many harvests are safely in the bag, or vat, yet other producers must still hope for sunny skies

What can you say? It looks like the difficult weather will continue for Burgundy this year.

Last Week's Forecast

Douro, Portugal

Last week's rains continue in the Douro through the end of this week. It's late in the season, making it difficult to deal with so much rain. Can a few weeks of fine weather remedy the situation?

Last Week's Forecast

Tain l'Hermitage, France

The weather in the northern Rhone continues to be a little unsettled but all in all things look manageable.

On the other hand, the southern Rhone is in for quite a nice week, with a bit of rain but mostly pleasant temperatures and mostly sunny skies under witch to harvest.

Last Week's Forecast

Champagne, France

It looks like the official start of harvest in Champagne has been marred by some rains but the weather improves through the end of the week with moderate temperature and sunshine.

West Chiltington, UK

That's a lot of rain for any wine region to absorb this late in the game. Will the weather improve after this week, and is there much left fruit left on the vine to worry about in any event?

Last Week's Forecast

Bolzano, Italy

There's a little rain in the forecast for the Alto Adige but the remainder of the week looks wonderful.

Last Week's Forecast

Taormina, Italy

It's a good thing that last week's weather was perfect in eastern Sicily, and I know many producers brought in much of their fruit, because this week is bringing a lot of rain with it and it looks like the rain will extend into next week.

  • notes from California: The harvest has not been uniformly early this year. Many of our late ripening varieties are already in but then several of our early ripeners are still in the vineyard. We are waiting on Pinot from Carneros (first to second week of September normally)) while our Sierra Foothills Barbera is in barrel already (usually harvests mid October)!

Warm weather in Sonoma and Napa are just what's needed to finish off the last of the harvest. We had a little rain the last couple days, so things need to dry off just a little. We saw some areas that had been completely harvested--all the whites appear to be in--and a few vineyards with big berries still hanging on the vine--given the locale, I would guess PN--as we drove through the RRV this Sunday.
