Keeping an eye on weather around the globe.

Hail has been the big story in France this year, just last weekI reported on the devastating impact of storms that tore throughout the Cotes de Beaune and since then there have been significant and damaging hailstorms in both Bordeaux and Champagne, and let us not forget the damage done in the Loire Valley in June.

While the power of the storm caused damage in Bordeaux's Left Bank, hail did not fail until the storm passed over the Giround estuary with three communes on the Left bank, Arveyres, Vayres, and Génissac suffering the greatest impact from the storms, which continued to move to the southeast before petering out in the St. Emilion region where hail damage was said to be apparent but not as significant as damage from winds and heavy rains.

In Champagne much the same is being reported, with obvious and significant hail damage of 15 to 20% being reported in some parts of the region but more widespread damage from days of heavy rains, wind and flash floods causing even greater concern for long term damage tot he vineyards. Our best wishes go out to all impacted by these disasters and we can only hope that their situations improve over the coming weeks.

Napa, California

More humidity and cooler temperatures are moving into the Napa Valley this week, slowing things down a bit and potentially increasing some disease pressure among the vines. It's definitely a change from the previous weeks of  beautiful weather.

Last Week's Forecast

Alba, Italy

This week starts off with some decidedly hot weather in Piedmont, a welcome sign following this year's slow start. The spots of rain and cooling trends through the end of the week all look promising.

Last Week's Forecast

Logroño, Spain

Last week's torrid weather and bright sunshine has been replaced by cool temperatures and plenty of rain for the coming days. This could be a welcome break in the weather if the rebound forecast for the end of the week manifests itself.

Last Week's Forecast

Sonoma, California

Cooler weather and some clouds are in store for Sonoma this week but all in all it looks like a fine late summer's week, except we're not quite in late summer yet.

Last Week's Forecast

McMinnville, Oregon

With a warming tend on the way and little in the way of rain to worry about this forecast looks like it might have been switched for Sonoma's. It's going to be a great week for grapes in the Willamette this week.

Last Week's Forecast

Jordan Station, Ontario Canada

Ontario's weather looks to be pretty much a repeat of last week's, which is to say not ideal. It's a challenging year in the Great White North

Last Week's Forecast

Tuscany, Italy

Like a broken record we have another gorgeous week in Tuscany, broken by a day of rain that the vines will probably enjoy. It's been a great stretch of weather in Tuscany this summer.

The weather is only going to get worse. This is due to all the Satellite's that are being launched daily. They tear additional holes into the ozone layer and let the solar flares & winds enter, then drive the jet stream into a frantic, sweeping cold fronts into hot fronts. That is where all the climatic weather we are getting comes from. Read the book "The Aerospace Assault on Planet Earth". The book explains into detail how the ozone hole has increased from 235,00 square miles in 1980 to 16.8 million square miles when last measured in 2008. Sincerely, Joe Torregiante, Aerospace Engineer

Yep, read his book--although Mr. Torregiante did not mention it explicitly, he is the author of the book he cites. Unfortunately for his theory, reliable estimates of the ozone hole indicate it has been shrinking.

In any case, it;s going to be a rough vintage in much of France. Have to say it's been on the cool side here, although Sonoma growers are touting this as a second straight incredible vintage.
