Another early spring arrival got things going early in 1990, and spring rains were generally sufficient to set up the vines for a vigorous growing season, with notable exceptions at elevation and towards the northern reaches of Chianti. The summer was brilliant, warm and sometimes hot, with occasional showers that refreshed the vines. Just before the harvest, light rains fell through the region, followed by several weeks of brilliant weather that allowed producers to harvest beautifully mature fruit. The harvest was a bit early throughout Tuscany, and while the fruit was perfectly ripe and the wines amazing in their youth, time has shown that many of these wines are just a bit simple and lack the definition and balance of the best vintages.
