2008 Wente Charles Wetmore Livermore Valley Cabernet Sauvignon CA 14.5% $12

Creamy and spicy on the nose with plenty of cinnamon and allspice notes accenting the red currant, strawberry and herb fruit. Soft but broad in the mouth, with a nice balance of herbal undertones, broad black cherry fruit and framing notes of spice and wood tannin topped with some spicy wild strawberry notes. The finish is a touch dry and influenced more by wood than fruit, though it does have a nice red fruit and herb finish. This is pretty well crafted and awfully drinkable in this style. 87pts

A few other lower priced, but not lower rated cabs...
337 Cab Sauv Lodi $10.99 in Delaware. Very good, especially for that price!
Century Oak winery Cab Sauv 2009 $14.99 PA State stores. very good also!
We will have to try your suggestions!

  • tried out the simply naked 2010 unoaked over the weekend...my husband thought it was a bit sweeter than what we usually hang out with, but i found the cs was nice and dry and oaky as expected...just a touch of fruit at the end :) very nice, and pocketbook-friendly! was on sale at $12.99 at our local store

A local winery, Fallbrook Winery in Southern California (San Diego area) puts out excellant Cabernet and Chardonney at very reasonable prices. We usually find it at local Costco stores.

I've read some recent 'moderate' reviews about the 2010 McManis Cab and find them to be somewhat understated. We all have different taste buds and expectations of course, but I find this cab to be a true treasure for the price. It needs to be properly aired out to gather its steam, but it could easily be presented as a $50 bottle and receive appropriate acknowledgements - I know, I did it last night.
