Top Super Premium Wines

GDP reveals the next set of PVA winners

Today, I’m adding to the list of winners from Snooth’s inaugural People’s Voice Wine Awards. We’ve revealed the value and premium category winners over the past few weeks, so today I present the super premium winners. This category includes wines that are between $25 and $50 a bottle, roughly. At this level, you begin to find wines that deliver exceptional quality. While there is little reason to pay more for wines, we will still be adding our list of winners from the luxury category next week.

The wines here are listed in order of votes received, so the first wine is also the prize category wine. You could call it the most popular super-premium priced wine in this year's People’s Voice Wine Awards. I’ve added a few Editor’s Choice wines to complete this winners list. Congratulations to all the winners!

Snooth’s top super-premium wines, with winemaker’s notes attached.

Pinot Noir - Super Premium

Willamette Valley Vineyards Estate Pinot Noir

The 2009 Estate Pinot Noir is an elegant wine that truly expresses the terroir of the three unique vineyard sites within the Willamette Valley that contribute to this bottling. Aromas of baked red apples, cherry, pie spice and brown sugar are complemented by a hint of cinnamon on the nose. A smooth and sweet entry with flavors of brandied cherry, dark chocolate and leather dominate the palate. A classic Pinot noir with delicate, round tannins and nicely balanced acidity that lingers into a spicy finish. Appealing now but will further reward those who cellar this wine. Peak drinkability 2012 - 2016.

Cabernet Sauvignon - Super Premium

Jordan Vineyard & Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley

2008 showcases both the delicacy of the vintage and Jordan’s smooth, approachable style. Elegant aromas of cherries and plums open to a soft, silky mouthfeel boasting a spectrum of red and black fruit flavors. A hint of spicy oak is drawn from the American oak, while the French oak builds a seductive mid-palate with soft fruit tannins. Enjoy now or cellar through 2020.

Chardonnay - Super Premium

Chalk Hill Estate Russian River Valley Chardonnay

The 2008 Estate Chardonnay has aromas that are concentrated and compex featuring caramel, toasted hazelnut, apricot, pear and elmon oil. The rich palate of tropical fruit is balanced by a distinct minerality typical of Chardonnay wines from the Estate. This wine can be enjoyed alone or alongside a wide variety of dishes including crab, scallops, fish and roasted chicken. It is the perfect accompaniment to rich butter or cream sauces.

Dessert White - Super Premium

Yalumba Museum Reserve Muscat

Made from the red and pink clones of the Muscat, a petite grains grape variety, this luscious dessert wine displays all the characteristics of this classic Australian wine style. Deep tawny red. Full, luscious middle. Richly flavoured, reminiscent of raisined fruits, nuts and spices. Sweet and soft yet unclaying finish. Incredible persistence of flavours.

Today, Yalumba maintains its reputation for premium quality fortified wines by occasionally releasing very small parcels of show reserve stocks. This outstanding old dessert wine is deep tawny in colour, with an aroma of wood aged rancio, elegant brandy spirit and hints of dried fruits and spices. This is one of Turley’s most broadly distributed wines giving a wide audience a chance to experience the Turley style which offers up rich, jammy fruit is a sweet, opulent style.

  • What a stupid list. Embarrassing.

  • Why are the popular vote wines stupid and embarrassing?
This list is the result of everyone voting for their favorite wines and producers,
some of which, like Brundlmayer and Trimbach make excellent wines.
Putting a label such as "Super Premium" on a wine seems a little silly, but I think in this case we're just talking about price point and hopefully quality.

  • Ridge Geyserville is a wonderful wine, but when did you change the rules that 64% zinfandel with 36% other is a zin? I mean, Ridge doesn't call it a zinfandel. Just sayin....

I agree with Trentonpet-e being that with those percent breakdowns it should not be in the zin class. Having said that, I do believe this wine is fantastic and is probably the best of Ridge Winery. Just reclassify it.

I agree with the assessment below. Who exactly are these "people" and have they ever consumed a libation that was not dispensed through a box or tap? My goodness, this list is beyond pedestrian. Perhaps apropos for the banquet at a Penn and Teller fan club convention, this selection does not reflect well on a website which purports to avail itself to serious wine drinkers. I'm going to hit the refresh button and pretend I didn't read this list.
