GDP reveals the next set of PVA winners

Tuscan Red - Super Premium

Ruffino Riserva Ducale

Color: Ruby red with garnet hues

Aroma: The impact is intense. At a first approach notes of cherry, plum and violet appear very powerful; subsequently it denotes strong aromas of tobacco, chocolate, cinnamon and black pepper. On the whole, this wine shows a very complex and powerful nose.

Tasting profile: Full-bodied, very powerful in the fruity tastes, with tannins that are elegant and well linked to a good acidity. The final is characterized by pleasant sensations of sweet tobacco. The aftertaste is particularly long and shows powerful notes of plums and more light aromas of clove.

Riesling - Super Premium

F E Trimbach Cuvee Frederic Emile Riesling

The best-known of Trimbach's "Gold Label wines, Frederic Emile Riesling is the epitome of the family style: pure and complex fruit brought to life with vibrant, muscular acidity. Totally dry. While its breadth and freshness are immediately apparent when every new vintage is released, Frederic  Emile's true depth and power come to life only after several more years of bottle aging.

Italian White - Super Premium

Bastianich Vespa Bianco

A tightly wound balance of minerality and citrus, evolving over time into a more viscous expression of wildflowers, clover honey and mature pear. The palate sensations are more like those of a red wine. Its tannic structure and acidic backbone lend it not only immediate impact but also a long life. Vespa Bianco can be further aged up to 7-10 years after the vintage.

Spanish Red - Super Premium

Bodegas Alejandro Fernandez Ribera del Duero Tinto

Excellent bouquet of cedar, tobacco, spice box, and blackberry. Layers of ripe black fruits, mineral notes, outstanding depth, and a lengthy finish. It will evolve for several years.

Editor’s Choice - Zinfandel - Super Premium

Ridge Geyserville

Intense ruby color. Ripe cherry and plum, peppermint, clove barrel spice, gravel/earth. Well-defined stone fruits on entry, medium- to full-bodied, coated tannins; a long finish with refreshing acidity. -Eric Baugher (2/12)

64% Zinfandel
20% Carignane
12% Petite Sirah
2% Alicante Bouschet
2% Mataro (Mourvedre)

Editor’s Choice - Other White - Super Premium

Vinoptima Reserve Ormond Gewurztraminer

Aromatic, wild and exotic fruits and spices with a luscious lingering finish. The Vinoptima Gewurztraminer is golden in color and exhibits luscious aromas of lychees, melon fruits and scented honey. The wine displays intense fruit sweetness yet the finish is drier than would be expected, allowing the most complex and exotic array of tropical fruit flavors, accented by pineapple and mandarin orange to shine through. The fruit flavors are perfectly balanced with delicate spicy accents of nutmeg and vanilla.

Editor’s Choice - Riesling - Super Premium

Grosset Polish Hill Riesling

The 2009 Polish Hill is a surprise packet with quite exuberant, lifted floral aromatics providing a departure from the norm. On the palate, there is a brightness and youthful tang that is rare in young Polish Hill Rieslings. As ever, there is intense, pristine lime juice flavour made more complex by slatey, minerally characters all compressed and coiled by the wine’s tightness of structure. There’s characteristic finesse, power and a steely quality before the taut natural acidity highlights its lingering, dry finish. While the 2009 Polish Hill should age as well as other vintages, it may provide more joy in its youth.

  • What a stupid list. Embarrassing.

  • Why are the popular vote wines stupid and embarrassing?
This list is the result of everyone voting for their favorite wines and producers,
some of which, like Brundlmayer and Trimbach make excellent wines.
Putting a label such as "Super Premium" on a wine seems a little silly, but I think in this case we're just talking about price point and hopefully quality.

Jordan and Ruffino Ducale super premium? Maybe semi premium? At best?

  • Ridge Geyserville is a wonderful wine, but when did you change the rules that 64% zinfandel with 36% other is a zin? I mean, Ridge doesn't call it a zinfandel. Just sayin....

I agree with Trentonpet-e being that with those percent breakdowns it should not be in the zin class. Having said that, I do believe this wine is fantastic and is probably the best of Ridge Winery. Just reclassify it.

I agree with the assessment below. Who exactly are these "people" and have they ever consumed a libation that was not dispensed through a box or tap? My goodness, this list is beyond pedestrian. Perhaps apropos for the banquet at a Penn and Teller fan club convention, this selection does not reflect well on a website which purports to avail itself to serious wine drinkers. I'm going to hit the refresh button and pretend I didn't read this list.
