GDP reveals the next set of PVA winners

Orin Swift the Prisoner

Great color, deep, dark garnet with a clean and bright red band in the rim. The aromas take a minute to come up, and then they take off into a blend of ripe berry and cherry with just a hint of new oak. The front of the wine is soft and almost immediately begins evolving into the broad mid-palate. The mid has weight, length, and structure. The acids were great in 2008 and provide an essential rounding effect to the "big fruit" inherent in the wine. The finish is long and filled with ripe, soft tannins. The 2008 has much the same tannin structure of the 2004 which is a personal favorite.

Italian Red - Super Premium

Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco

Classic Barbaresco, scent of spices, pepper, black cherries on the nose, powerful, firm, elegant and ethereal on the palate. Very long finish. Perfect for rich pastas, red meats, game and cheese.

Sauvignon Blanc - Super Premium

Cloudy Bay Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc

Pale straw green in color and enticingly fragrant, the 2011 Sauvignon Blanc offers lifted aromas of ripe stone fruit and juicy citrus with underlying notes of blackcurrant leaf and tomato plant spice. The palate is fine yet succulent, with zesty citrus flavors and fresh acidity. There is an appealing plushness about this wine especially as it leads into a lingering and characteristically crisp finish.

Syrah - Super Premium

Mollydooker the Boxer Shiraz

Wow, this wine is definitely punching above its weight, and no wonder - the Fruit Weight is 73%, so it is almost at Party wine level! The power of the fruit is so enjoyable. It has a massive array of flavours, and awesome intensity but the thing that really finishes the wine off is the creamy layers and smooth mouth feel. It’s so voluptuous. Sweet, multi layered fruit, chocolate, fresh plum – a complete flavour spectrum. Excited to hold it in my mouth.

South American Red - Super Premium

Bodega Catena Zapata Catena Alta Malbec

Angélica Zapata Malbec Alta 2008 is a blend of Malbec grapes sourced from different vineyards. The result is a wine of great concentration and elegance. The “Angélica” vineyard offers ripe plum jammy flavors with a soft, supple mouthfeel. “La Pirámide” lends intense black berry fruit with spicy black pepper and clove. “Altamira” provides elegance and freshness on the palate with a flavor profile of red berry fruit. Lot 3 from “Adrianna” is intensely floral, with hints of violets and lavender, while lot 9 provides a deeply violet color and a long persistent finish of cassis flavors and mineral notes. These five elements contribute to wonderful complexity in the final blend.

Bordeaux - Super Premium

Chateau Cantemerle Haut Medoc

The 2010 vintage brought out all the best in Cantemerle’s terroir. A deep color sets the tone for this wine: complex, concentrated and long in the mouth, with a finish which just doesn’t finish, leaving an impression of great aromatic richness. The wine’s dense structure is masterfully controlled, showing elegance without heaviness, and a liveliness highlighting its freshness. Swirling brings the wine alive in the glass, with aromas of spice, tobacco, black currant and plums. This is Cantemerle’s natural character, with the added richness a great vintage brings.

Other Red - Super Premium

Twomey Napa Valley Merlot

Our 2007 Twomey Merlot is a beautiful example of what this noble variety can achieve in an excellent vintage: suppleness, complexity and great expression of berry fruit. It has a dark ruby color and a nose of fresh, ripe black cherry and blackberry, dark chocolate and what the French call "torifaction", the alluring smell of roasting coffee. On the palate, it has an attack full of explosive fruit and violets prolonged by plenty of "umami", the savory fifth taste. It has a long finish, echoing berry fruit, chocolate and grainy, well-integrated tannins that promise excellent cellaring potential. This Merlot will continue to give drinking pleasure through 2022.

Grenache and Blends - Super Premium

Grant Burge "The Holy Trinity" Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre Barossa Valley

This Grenache, Shiraz, Mourvedre blend is brick red in color and exhibits a complex array of aromas including cinnamon, hints of cedar and new leather, violets and sweet ripe strawberries. Aromas of ripe red berries and dense spice are also present and these aromas flow seamlessly onto the palate. The palate is generous and full with flavors of ripe plums and red berry fruits, with complementary florals and spice. A juicy mouthfeel and silky tannins, the wine finishes with intense fruit leaving you wanting more. The Holy Trinity displays an intensity, texture and structure that make it an extremely well balanced wine, one which will continue to age beautifully with careful cellaring for the next 10 years or more.

Other White - Super Premium

Brundlmayer Gruner Veltliner Kamptaler Terrassen

Flowery, delicate lime fruit, apple and pineapple with a hint of herbs, spice and yeast, soft at first taste, despite its lively acidity, then straightforward, fresh on the palate, sappy fruit, mineral nuances, good structure and balance, medium body and fine minerals in the spicy finish. Classic for Kamptal Veltliner.

Food pairing: A perfect companion to many starters such as smoked trout, ham, cold vegetables, tapas, or fresh marinated goat cheese with herbs; also very good with fish barbecue, seafood, or roasted chicken.

  • What a stupid list. Embarrassing.

  • Why are the popular vote wines stupid and embarrassing?
This list is the result of everyone voting for their favorite wines and producers,
some of which, like Brundlmayer and Trimbach make excellent wines.
Putting a label such as "Super Premium" on a wine seems a little silly, but I think in this case we're just talking about price point and hopefully quality.

  • Ridge Geyserville is a wonderful wine, but when did you change the rules that 64% zinfandel with 36% other is a zin? I mean, Ridge doesn't call it a zinfandel. Just sayin....

I agree with Trentonpet-e being that with those percent breakdowns it should not be in the zin class. Having said that, I do believe this wine is fantastic and is probably the best of Ridge Winery. Just reclassify it.

I agree with the assessment below. Who exactly are these "people" and have they ever consumed a libation that was not dispensed through a box or tap? My goodness, this list is beyond pedestrian. Perhaps apropos for the banquet at a Penn and Teller fan club convention, this selection does not reflect well on a website which purports to avail itself to serious wine drinkers. I'm going to hit the refresh button and pretend I didn't read this list.
