The Best Rose in the U S of A

With August in full swing, we are still looking to quench our rosé thirst. In fact that thirst might even stretch into September and beyond - though as the summer temperatures give way to cooler autumnal climes, you might want a rosé that’s got a bit of heft to it as a traveling partner. Domestic rosés have come a long way since the "white zin" era. People loved them because they were fun and fruity, but domestic rosé producers have broken free from that reputation. It took awhile, but the United States is producing some of the finest rosé in the world.

Eberle Côtes-du-Rôbles Rosé 2018

Deep, spicy and almost salty on the nose with a big beef jerky tone and some almost foxy, intense wild berry, mulberry, huckleberry fruit. Big and round in the mouth with some black grape skin notes up front and an impression of sweetness from the alcohol, which is remarkably well-integrated. This is smooth and rich and also shows some real pronounced huckleberry character on the palate. The finish is a bit spicy at first with a hint of white pepper then turning a bit meaty and dark before ending with a spicy finale.

Isabel Mondavi Rose 2017

Deeply aromatic with black currant fruit topped with gentle herb tones and background notes of black spice. This is rather big in the mouth but very juicy at the same time with a lightly sweet edge to the black raspberry black currant fruit. More tannin than any rosé and much richer as well. This is really funl crowd-pleaser that pushes the fruit envelope.

Adelsheim Willamette Vallely Rose 2018

Nice soil and green herb leaf tones on the nose are joined by astringent and lightly spicy red fruit notes. This comes off as quite tense with firm acids and modest but noticeable tannins. The fruit, raspberry and bitter orange rind-toned is fairly intense and covers the structure enough yet it allows for some mineral and soil tones to seep through the mid-palate. The acid lends the finish a rather citrusy base with top notes of raspberry preserves. This is fine and complex, a very satisfying wine.

Castello di Amorosa Rosato 2018

Floral on the nose and sweetly so, with lovely cherry/raspberry fruit and a hint of tree bark. A bit broad in the mouth but this presents really well with firm acid underpinnings supporting rather fresh and transparent fruit. The fruit is fresh and recalls wild strawberries with nice aromatic expression in the mouth. The finish is really quite intense, lots of fruit, a touch of sugar adding length, enough acid for balance. Really very nice and in a style that straddles crowd-pleasing and geeky.

Beckman PMV Grenache Rose 2018

This is bit sweet smelling on the nose with almost a caramel edge to the wild raspberry and earthy red currant fruit with an nice floral underlay.  Soft and broad on entry with really detailed herbal elements early on the palate, which are followed by a soft blanket of earthy fruit. This shows a whisper of tannin with good supporting acidity and a late arriving earthiness.  Rather gentle and easy going with a nice return of that earthy red fruit, very wild raspberry toned before finishing with a nicely spiced finale.
