Top 9 Spanish Wines

A collection of wines found off the beaten path

Spain is a huge country that produces tons of wine, but we often get caught up in tasting wines from only its most famous regions. I repeatedly hear what great bargains can be found throughout Spain and I agree wholeheartedly, but sometimes for the best bargains, you have to go off the beaten path.

Today, I give you some of the other Spanish wines. Some of the wines here were originally to be part of a larger tasting report, but Hurricane Sandy had other plans for me. To that end, you’ll find some impressive Ribera del Duero wines leading off the list. With the region’s history, they do have a bit of an edge when it comes to winemaking for the international market.

Other regions, like Utiel-Requena, Carinena, or Vino de la Tierra Contraviesa Alpujarra, are just making names for themselves. With the set of wines I tasted, predominantly value wines, it’s easy to see that they are succeeding. There are the usual suspects here, Tempranillo and Grenache for example, but there is also Cabernet and Merlot thoughtfully blended with the indigenous varieties. The result is a set of wines that runs the gamut from those light and easy to drink to those that will really benefit from time in the cellar but may never lose their powerful dispositions. This is an intriguing set of wines and one well worth taking a look at!

2006 De Restia Tempranillo Crianza Selected Harvest Ribera del Duero 14.5% $18

A powerful, take no prisoners style of wine that is packed with intense flavors of bitter cherry, leathery fruit, dried herbs, toasty oak and lightly peppery spice, but it's still aggressively tannic today. Good aging potential. 91pts Read The Full Review

2008 Veleta Nolados Vino de la Tierra Contraviesa Alpujarra 14% $15

A bit tight and in need of a bit of cellaring, this nonetheless shows off faint suggestions of charred chili and green herb, along with a light hint of black raspberry framed by vanilla and a light toasty top note. A style that shows excellent depth and balance. 90pts Read The Full Review

2006 Bodegas Iranzo Tempranillo Vertvs Crianza Utiel-Requena 13% $13

Cabernet Sauvignon 40%, Cabernet Franc 40%, Tempranillo 20%

Understated and elegant, this offers up a transparent texture that allows light washes of rocks and raspberry to flow across the palate and finish with a subtle persistence to the sweet, herb-accented fruit. 88pts  Read The Full Review

  • Utiel-Requena; A wine featured heavily in your pages, specialises in wine made from the BOBAL grape, unique to the area yet the 3rd most planted grape in Spain. Strange that this article makes no mention of Bobal, it's not even listed in the grapes that make up the wine!

Gregory D.P you really should do your homework before writing an article!
