Top 5 Bloody Mary Upgrades Last week on The Spirit, we shared our tips for building the perfect Bloody Mary, from how to make the mix to the best garnishes to throw into the drink at the end. Now that you’ve got your traditional Bloody Mary cocktail down to a science—we know you were practicing all weekend, and we congratulate you for that—it’s time to look at a few ways to jazz up your bloodies.

Just like in cooking, an upgrade can only be achieved after the traditional way has been made successfully backwards and forwards. By this point, you should be able to taste your Bloody Mary and know if it needs a little more horseradish, a little less lemon juice, etc. You are an expert on the subject, we know, so now it’s time to have some fun!

Read on for our top 5 Bloody Mary upgrades. These recipes aren’t asking you to stray too far from the original; rather they’re incorporating additions that tend to be overlooked when putting together the classic cocktail, but upon preparation and tasting, turn out to be the missing piece to this boozy puzzle.  And as you never know when you may even be looking forward to your next hangover, you’ll be glad to cure it with one of these delicious concoctions. Have any Bloody Mary upgrades that you’ve come up with on your own? Let us know about them in the comments section. Cheers!

I spy a piece of okra in the prawn photo. That was my suggestion: pickled Okra skewered in a traditional Mary. Spicy pickled okra can be found in larger, Southern grocery stores in jars and they add a unique twist. (good in a martini, as well)

You really want to step these up a notch? Try Zatarains Creole Seasoning on the rim. Not overly spicy hot, but the PERFECT alternative to plain old rock salt!

All this bloody mary talk, yum! I just discovered LAVA Bloody Mary mix and it's sooo good. Perfect spiciness too imho and love that they use non-gmo tomatoes. You should try it http://www.lavabmm.com.
