Top 10 Sparkling Wines of the Holiday Season

Stock up on the best bubbly for the holidays

I’ve been tasting sparkling wines as of late, and am in the midst of publishing my tasting notes by category, beginning with Cavas next week. But, in light of the intense holiday shopping weekend ahead of us, I thought you might want to know what some of the top wines of the season are.

Here’s a short list of my favorites, all finishing at the top of their respective price classes and all wonderfully delicious, sure to add the perfect finishing touches to your holiday celebrations. Make sure to stock up though, since we’ve only just begun to celebrate!

2009 Naveran Cava Brut Spain 12.5% $14

Gentle on the nose with a fresh floral top note over almost meaty citrus notes that flash hints of sweet peach, apricot and caramel. Very nicely balanced if a touch sweet on entry, this delivers tons of sweet peachy fruit with some candied citrus framing notes and solid depth of flavor. Air brings out complex notes of yeast, hazelnuts and candied apples. This is fairly dry, finely balanced and finishes with refreshing mineral and almost spicy herb suggestions over rich yellow apple fruit. A really nice and refined package. 89pts

NV Schloss Koblenz Weisslack Trocken Sekt Germany 11.5% $13

Complex clay, green apple, and caramel notes greet the nose topped with some gentle green spice notes. A fine mousse and slightly creamy yet bright texture makes for an attractive mouthfeel that supports attractive lemon pith, green tea and polleny flavors. This turns rather citrusy on the back end and the acid supports these bright lemon flavors right through the long finish.  A firm, dry style that is decidedly refreshing. 87pts

NV Bianchi Extra Brut Argentina 12% $22

This is intense on the nose with powerful aromas of raw bread dough, white peach, lemon, blood orange and white mushroom. The mousse is just a touch coarse here but this packs in lovely lemon, blood orange and bitter almond flavors framed by light brioche notes and a fine mineral and white cherry undertone. A little creaminess appears on the back end along with beautiful patisserie notes that flow over the fairly long finish over pithy citrus fruits. Awfully good stuff. 91pts

NV Segura Viudas Cava Reserva Heredad Spain 12% $21

Rather refined on the nose with quince, honey and floral aromas over a chalky, earthy base. This shows excellent integration in the mouth with a fine mousse, fresh fruity flavors of melon and citrus accented with gently toasty suggestions of yeast and pollen. Complex, fresh and with good depth of flavor, this drifts off with a long, bright finish that folds in mineral and apple skin flavors for an added layer of complexity. 91pts

NV JJ Vincent Cremant de Bourgogne Brut France 12% $22

Perfumed and fairly complex on the nose with dried flowers, honeycomb, toasted nut and earthy, leesy toned dried apple fruit aromas. Bright and dry with good focus, this is less complex in the mouth, quite simple in fact, but what it does, delivering a crisp, clean mouthfeel with earthy complexity to the subtle dried apple and citrus fruits, it does quite well. The finish is tight, clean and a bit short but this is dry, crisp and delicious. I would buy this. 88pts

  • Nine of the wines you have select are an excellent choice, but the one from Argentina I disagree, in this country we are developing outstanding sparkling wines, but the one from Bianchi you have choosen it´s not one off them, it´s good, but no enough to be in that list, I suggest you make some research, and you will find a lot of other superior wines to select.
