Top 10 Sparkling Roses for the Holidays

Step out of the box with some sparkling roses for the holidays

Lots of creamy raspberry fruit on the nose over light white mushroom, chalk, and floral aromas with a hint of smoke and some marzipan notes. Pretty fruity on entry, this shows bright acidity, but the sweetness still comes through a touch too assertively. The fruit blends nice herbal and faintly vegetal, beet rooty elements with the rich raspberry and cherry fruit on the palate. This finishes fairly dry with that beet root note helping to anchor the fruit and lend it tension. 87pts

NV Villa Sandi Il Fresco Rosato Brut 11.5% $13

Sweet strawberry jam and melon aromas on the nose show hints of green herb and a touch of apple stem. Fresh and lively in the mouth with crisp raspberry and slightly peachy astringent fruit that is dry and transparent on the palate. A bit simple, this is very refreshing and clean, making it easy to drink. The finish shows pretty good length and more complexity than the palate with nice earthy and lightly dried apricot notes. 85pts

NV Segura Viudas Cava Brut Rose 12% $8

Herbal and almost leafy on the nose with chalky base notes and lots of pithy fruit tones wrapped around assertive pie crust and light rhubarb aromas. Light and fresh in the mouth with a slightly aggressive mousse. This is fairly dry with strawberry and apple fruit that shows a dry earthy and slightly herbal tone on the back end and through the modest, acid driven finish. 84pts

2009 Szigeti Pinot Noir Rose Brut Aus 13% $22

Tart strawberry fruit over smoky, ashy earth tones on the nose are joined by hints of white chocolate and rose petals.  Round and intense in the mouth, this brings a lot of ripe cherry to the front early on, with late arriving acidity adding a nice citrusy top note. There’s enough sweetness here to add roundness and accentuate the fruity nature of this wine but this never comes off as sweet. Finishing with clean, fresh raspberry and pithy white fruits, this is a balanced and generous sparkler. 88pts

The fruit is gentle with hints of raspberry, apple and melon in the mouth leading to a dry, firm finish that shows dusty mineral notes and a flush of tart cranberry fruit. 88pts

I like this list, though I am surprised to see Segura Viudas on it and not Gruet sparkling rose from Santa Fe.

Gregory, I have a question. You've done a number of sparkling wine pieces this winter, but - unless I've missed it - I've yet to see a mention of English or Welsh fizz. This despite increasingly frequent wins at international competitions for the likes of RidgeView, Nyetimber, Camel Valley, Bolney, etc.. Is this because you just don't see our wines in the US, or because you don't like them? If the latter, what characteristic is it that doesn't appear? Thanks.
