Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies and Blandy’s 5 Years Old Malmsey Madeira
I consider myself to be an “adventurous” eater. By that, I mean I’m generally open to trying new things. My list of “You couldn’t pay me to eat that” foods is relatively short. That adventurous spirit extends to wine and food pairings. I like to experiment. Sometimes magic happens, and sometimes not so much. One of the most memorable magical food and wine pairings I’ve ever enjoyed was a cookie and wine pairing. I paired one of my favorite cookies, Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip, with Madeira. It was food and wine match that went beyond the food and wine each making the other taste better. No. Magic is when the food and wine together create a third, even better flavor! The wine was Blandy’s 5 Years Old Malmsey Madeira (SRP; $24) It’s a wine produced using  the white grape variety Malmsey (a.k.a Malvalsia Candida) that  was aged in American oak casks in the traditional 'Canteiro' system. This system involves the gentle heating of the wine in the lofts of the lodges in Funchal for at least two years. Over the years the wine was transferred from the top floors to the middle floors and eventually to the ground floor where it is cooler. It’s a rich, full-bodied wine with aromas that suggest toffee, brown sugar, raisins, and dried fruits. On the palate, it’s sweet, and viscous with a tangy acidity and flavors of caramel, toffee, raisins and a bit of citrus with a satisfying sweet finish. Aside from peanut butter chocolate chip cookies, it is a fantastic match for dessert dishes, especially fruit cakes, nuts, pecan pie, rich chocolate puddings and bleu cheeses.
