The $10,000 Cellar, Part Two

Diverse additions from different corners of Burgundy

Domaine Lignier-Michelot

If Chevillon’s wine strikes some as too austere at times, the opposite can certainly be said of Virgile Lignier’s wines at Lignier-Michelot. These can be rather opulent wines at times, they are well oaked yet expressive of the earthy style of Morey-Saint-Denis. Of his wines, I prefer the Faconnieres for its added backbone which allows the wine to absorb its oak and lose some of its baby fat. It’s this ageability which sets this wine apart and makes it a solid value, and a bit of a sleeper, in Burgundy.
