The Daisy Cocktail

A refreshing classic for warmer weather

 


The Daisy cocktail is old school. It’s been documented in recipe books as early as the last quarter of the 19th century, and likely consumed way before that. 

Like many popular classic drinks, it’s essentially a gussied up sour. There are several different versions of it, but the general consensus is that the basic foundation is spirit (often brandy of some kind), lemon juice, some sort of sweet liquid and a fizzy top off. 

Then it got fancier, the sweet component became yellow Chartreuse. Then the base switched to gin. Finally, the Chartreuse evolved to grenadine or raspberry syrup. This final pink version is said to be the predecessor of the Cosmopolitan. 
Never mind the Blahniks, the Daisy can be a dang fine drink. I’m partial to combining the sweet component by using both a liqueur and a sweet red something. But you can still use one or the other, and also switch up the base spirit. Whichever way you choose, this is a refreshing, springy cocktail that would also be a great treat for Mother’s Day. 

I’m including two versions. One that’s very basic and one with Cynar artichoke digestif for refreshment Italian style. Enjoy and happy sipping!

The Daisy


Ingredients

1 ½ oz base spirit (gin, tequila, rum, whiskey, brandy or vodka)
¾ oz orange or elderflower liqueur (for a sweet kick)*
¾ oz fresh lemon juice
2 barspoons of grenadine, raspberry jam or raspberry syrup*
soda water
optional garnishes: fresh mint sprig, fresh berries

*Alternative: omit either the sweet liqueur or the grenadine/raspberry and use only a ½ oz of lemon juice. 

Preparation

Shake all ingredients except the soda until well combined. Strain into a julep or Collins glass filled with cracked ice. Top with splash of soda and garnish. 

Daisy Italiano


Ingredients

1 ½ oz straight rye or Bourbon
½ oz Cynar 
½ oz fresh lemon juice
2 barspoons grenadine, raspberry jam or raspberry syrup 
couple dashes rhubarb bitters or Peychaud’s (optional) 
Soda water
garnish: lemon peel 
 
Preparation

Shake all ingredients except bitters and soda well to combine. Strain into a wide lowball or Collins glass filled with cracked ice. Add the bitters if desired, top with splash of soda and garnish.

    I have some homemade, blueberry/blackberry infused cachaca that I used for the base and didn't add the syrup. The result was a divine beverage that cooled off this warm Phoenix evening.
