The Daily Rant from Piemonte

Daily updates from the land of Nebbiolo!

Sitting here bleary eyed and jet lagged in Verduno, Piemonte, heart of Barolo country and I just had to get things started.

This is the place to find the hot tips I have for all of you, and the inside scoop from Barolo-land this year. I've got plenty of visits scheduled for the coming 2 weeks, over 2 dozen in fact, and will be tasting 100s of newly release Piedmontese wines. Of course I'll write up my impressions and make sure I ge tthem to you in due time, but here are some details that just can't wait.

Piemonte, Day 1

We hit the ground running today, driving streight from an early arrival at Milan's malpensa airport to the venerable cellars of Vallana. Once famous for their muscular yet elegant style of Northern Piedmnt Nebbiolo, Vallana is mounting a comeback with new wines, new vines, and a studied commitment to quality.

I tasted throught heir line-up today and one wine really stood. I'll write up all my impressions soon but to find out which of their wine's stood out, check out the short video.

The video's may have to be short while I'm here (sure to please some people!) due to less than ideal internet connections.

The Daily Rant from Piedmont: Verduno and Barolo edition

Just back between visits with some recommendations for 2008 Barolo picks. Tops so far have been the 2009 Canonica, 2008 Oddero Rocche, 2008 Brezza Bricco Sarmassa, 2008 Burlotto Monvigliero, and 2008 Giuseppe Rinaldi, both bottlings. Lend me your ear for a second to learn more about these wines and the vintage as it's shaping up.

The Daily from Piedmonte: New Barolo Vintages

Another day in Piedmonte, and the word of the day is Barolo. However, the Barolo 2007 is probably one to skip over all together. Get excited for the newer vintages to be coming soon, especially the 2008 vintage. This is a really great time for Barolo, with these newer vintages coming out. This week starts my daily tastings of 65 wines a day, and I can't wait to tell you all about them.

Some Serralunga?

Wrapping up, well almost, the briefs from Piedmont with a few words on some producers in Serralunga, and La Morra. These pre Nebbiolo Prima, that's the big tasting that I'm joining today, visits has been facsinating as it's given me a chance to get familiar with the 2008 through 2011 vintages before being inundated with samples.

The vintages are shaping up to be an impressive string to cap the decade with. I'll go into more depth on that later but now I'll just give you the low down on some wines from.... Schiavenza, Conterno, Porro, and Marcarini!

More updates and Barbaresco 2009

Checking on on some of my last visits and first words on 2009 Barbaresco and 2007 Barbaresco Riservas.

2008 Barolo

After a day of tasting 2008 barolo from producers large and small I'm getting a much better handle on this vintage. Thers a little 2005 here married to some 1985. It's a very attractive vintage, and one to buy, carefully.

Check out the video for some recomendation as well as commentary on some of the wines of Chiara Boschis.

La Morra - Monforte

Closing in on the last bottle tasted during this Piedmonte extravaganza 2012, but first a was able to taste the line up from La Morra and Monforte yesterday. Things are looking a little woody but the prognosis is good and it seems as though La Morra in particular had a potentially terrific year!

If you need any information about Piemonti, ask my buddy Danny Bertolo, he knows everything about the region and wine.
