The Daily Rant 2012.4

Musings from a busy mind.

The continued thoughts of GDP on wines, in this case from white Rhone varieties, as well as the state of the wine world. Let's take those twists and turns together, and find doors unopened to explore!

Can I interest you in this dead shark?

A bargain at $24 million!

Yes, the world is rife with scam artists, in fact they dominate the upper reaches of all commerce, why else would a dead shark be worth millions, or a diamond, or wine for that matter? It's simply because there are enough suckers with money out there and hucksters that pry on them to create a market.

Wine is ultimately an agricultural phenomenon and many people, yours truly included, might be hard pressed to distinguish between the $100 bottle and the $1000 bottle. What then is the difference? Hype, pure and simple.

Vio- what?

Today we're kicking off #GTiWhiteRhone with a look at the most familiar white Rhone variety: Viognier

"Vee-o-nyay," by the way!

Famous for its peachy and floral aromas, Viognier may have started in the Rhone but it has since spread around the globe. Today, we're taking a look at one from the Rhone and another coming all the way from southern Oregon.

Join me as we talk about Viognier!

More on Viognier

We're continuing our look at Viognier with a pair of exciting Viogniers from the West Coast, where the wines are particularly successful and popular.

More Great Viognier

This is why I love this business so much. Not only am I tasting new wines daily - wines that make me rethink my prejudices and pre-conceived notions - but I also get to discover new and impressive wines with some regularity!

Viognier admittedly is not a wine that I've paid much attention to over the years, finding many examples simply too fruity, sweet and low in acid. Looks like I haven't been paying enough attention! Today I tried three very strong examples of Viognier and was delightfully surprised by one from a producer who is new to me. Check out the video for more details.

Pure fun in a bottle

Let's wrap up our look at Viognier with a pair of wines that whine with pure joy. Hailing from some syrprising places, this pair of wines really hit my sweet spot of simple enjoyment, something far too few wines manage to do!

Roussanne is the Word

Is Roussanne the next Viognier? It certainly is showing up more frequently as a varietal wine, but will the white Rhone vaiety break through? Do the wines have what it takes to enthrall consumers? While I'm not convinced, it's early in the game yet and these examples of Roussanne show what an open field it is today.

Great Value White Rhones

Here's what to expect from white Rhone blends, even ones that are really attractively priced! Let's dive into some great wine to get you started on exploring white Rhones and all its glorious variety.

What's it really worth?

So I caught some flack about comments I made last week, thinking that two wines would be great values at modest prices. Turns out the wines were pricier than I thought. Thanks for pointing that out folks. Now untwist your panties and take what I'm saying with a grain of salt. I get to decide what I want to pay for a wine, you can choose whether to give a hoot or not!

Speaking of which, two great wines passed muster today and if you want to learn about what white Rhones can do, this is a must see!

  • Is there a benchmark V. at a reasonable price, ie. perhaps Cline? And would you look at what is happening in New Mexico and Colorado with V.?
