South African Cabernet

Tasting 5 great red wines

Next » 1 of 6
South African Cabernet I am a big fan of South African wines. I find real terroir and a true intersection of new and old world wine styles in these fine bottles. The unusual combination of a warm, consistent growing season that happens to be somewhat compressed yields wines that are well ripened, but that rarely seem to shake the soil free from their roots.

South African reds tend to be smoky and savory with fresh fruit and a bit of funk, and I am not speaking simply about Pinotage here. The Bordeaux varietals I’ve enjoyed from South Africa have typically been distinctly smoky, gently vegetal and quite full enough of ripe fruit to satisfy many a palate. I highly recommend tasting a few if you want to gain a fuller understanding of the range and variety of flavors Cabernet is truly capable of.

I also am a fan of south african wines, but unfortunately not a lot of the good ones get here to the US. Look out for Olsen wines, from Paarl- a great drinking Pinotage 2007 will very pleasantly surprise you. As of now, only available in the NY area...
