René Barbier – A Century of HistoryIt’s been well over a century since René Barbier’s father Léon (yes there really was a René Barbier!) trekked from his home in Avignon, France southward across the Pyrenees to eventually settle in Tarragona, Spain. From the first vintages, when Léon established one of the first wineries in Spain to bottle their own wine, through to today, René Barbier has always been at the forefront, producing authentic wines that capture the essence of the Mediterranean lifestyle. Light and crisp on the nose with soft notes of apples, dried orange rind, sweet lemon, chalk, and a salty edge. On the palate this is round, with good acid and yet a soft, almost delicate richness. The flavors of tangerine and apple are fresh and crisp with a subtle mineral edge that helps add definition to the moderate finish. This is a lighter-styled wine, deliciously fresh and rich with the simple appeal of fresh fruit flavors. A great summer sipper. 86pts
This has a slight dried fruit character with notes of cherries, clay, and dried floral tones all mingling on the soft nose. In the mouth this is much more freshly fruited with strong wild cherry and wild plum fruit tones. It’s a slightly lush style of rose, bright with acid yet rich with glycerin giving the wine a broad, soft palate feel. The acid really gives nice lift to the finish where there’s an interesting meaty streak that adds complexity to the moderately long finale, which shows just the merest touch of tannin. 86pts
After starting off with a little leathery funk this gains some spicy red plum tones over a bed of cocoa powder and bay leaf. Moderately soft on entry, this has nice small tannins balanced by bright acidity keeping this fresh and lively. The core of lightly spiced plum skin leads across the midpalate to an easy, smooth finish which offers up more cocoa tones with a nice hint of fennel. 85pts
