2012 Tin Barn Sauvignon Blanc Hi Vista Vineyard Carneros Sonoma 13.7% $23

Floral and balsamic on the nose with an unusual blend of green herb and new oak that creates the impression of mintiness on the nose. The fruit here is rather subtle with honeydew melon and creamy apple aromas. Almost sweet on entry with green apple acidity quickly adding a bit of tension in the mouth. This has an entice texture, creamy yet vibrant with softly creamy and vanilla laced green apple and kiwi fruit flavors that are subtle though balance the wood spice nicely on the palate, though the wood and a hint of tannin becomes more obvious on the moderately long and nutty finish. There’s a lot to like here though this is not your typical Sauvignon Blanc. It would be nice to revisit this in a year to see how the wood integrates. 87pts

2012 Schug Sauvignon Blanc Sonoma Coast 13.5% $20

Rather fruity on the nose in a fresh guava, peach, tangelo kind of way with the fruit built upon a base of old wood notes. This enters the mouth soft and creamy though there is enough acidity here to keep this lively and fresh in the mouth. The fruit on the palate echoes the nose with attractive freshness and perhaps a bit more of a tropical papaya/pineapple cast to it before it turns melony on the backend and fades into a clean, lightly green fruited finish. 87pts

2012 Voss Sauvignon Blanc Napa Valley 12% $20

This is intensely aromatic with assertive aromas of cut grass, grapefruit, lime and an underlying roasted chili note. Light bodied and beautifully balanced, this is perhaps a touch softer in the mouth than I might prefer but at the same time it’s subtle and ethereal delivering finely balanced grapefruit, green chili and green cardamom spice notes on the palate and through the long finish. A bit simple perhaps but with lovely clarity and freshness.  87pts

2012 Napa Cellars Sauvignon Blanc Napa Valley 14.3% $20

Fruity and spicy on the nose with a hint of white pepper under tart apple, lemon and pineapple aromas framed with a hint of green tea. This enters the mouth with an almost sweet edge to the fruit followed by fine acidity that really perks up the mid palate with its rich, vivid flavors of pineapple and green apple This does stumble a bit on the finish which is short and shows lingering hard acids that throw the palate a bit out of balance. Pretty big and bold. 86pts

2011 Markham Sauvignon Blanc Napa Valley 13.8% $14

This is quite aromatic and green on the nose with notes of roasted green chilies, kiwi fruit and a green vegetal base note. Juicy if simple on entry, this offers up a nice core of sweet citrus fruits and apricot nectar notes in an easy to drink style. Taking on a slight tropical cast to the fruit on the backend, this finishes quickly with soft acids. 84pts

2011 Sivas-Sonoma Sauvignon Blanc Sonoma County 13.5% $12

A bit low and compact on the nose with aromas of dried grass, pineapple, and gooseberry. Bright and lightweight in the mouth, this is rather simple if fresh with an attractive if subtle one two punch of grapefruit and peach in the mouth and not much follow through on the finish. 82pts

2012 Charles Krug Sauvignon Blanc St. Helena Napa 13.5% $16

Soft on the nose with gently rising aromas of creamy pineapple laced with a hints of green pepper and canned peach juice all topped with musky floral notes and a hint of lemongrass. Soft and creamy in the mouth, this is a bit fat and lacks any sense of detail delivering sweet pineapple, peach and vaguely grapefruit tinged flavors to the palate with a brief canned citrus juice toned finish. There’s an odd hint of caramel that runs through this. Chunky and rustic. 82pts

2012 Groth Sauvignon Blanc Napa Valley 13.9% $22

Tight and citrussy on the nose with a very faint blade of grass edge of herbaceousness. Bright and sapid on entry, this sort of dissolved away into a sea of softness in the mouth. There’s not much here here as this straddles the line between fruit and vegetal notes to the point that this ends up being dilute and rather anonymous. The finish is brief and lacks detail. This is a wine of texture, designed to be inoffensive and easy to drink. It is both, and not much more. 80pts
