March 7, 2012 — The Institute of Masters of Wine awarded South Australian winemaker Peter Gago with the Winemaker’s Winemaker of the Year award, according to the Telegraph.
The Institute of Masters of Wine, along with Drinks Business magazine, presented the award to the Pensfolds’ winemaker at the Prowein wine fair in Dusseldorf, Germany on Monday night. As chief winemaker for Penfolds, Gago oversees the production of critically-acclaimed wines, including Grange, Bin 389 and Yattarna Chardonnay.
While grateful to receive such a prestigious award, Gago said that he felt regretful that he had to leave Penfolds during harvest.
“‘I'm naturally chuffed and thankful,’ Mr Gago said. ‘This award offers outstanding global recognition for Australian winemaking, and naturally it's a terrific accolade for the Penfolds winemaking team.
‘I'm also feeling guilty. It's harvest and I'm approximately 12,000 miles away. Payback, no doubt, awaits when I return.’”
