Where Sauvignon Blanc thrives

Martinborough

With only some 2% of the nation’s vines, Martinborough receives an inordinate amount of attention for its wines. While Pinot Noir might be king here, Sauvignon Blanc is the second most-widely planted variety.

Martinborough benefits from an unusually long growing season that results from the uncommonly cool nights. Even during the depths of summer, the night air retains a chill, slowing down the grapes’ maturation and allowing for long, slow ripening.

    read the NZ article and loved it! knew very little about NZ wine other than it was known for Sauv. Blancs. i tend to not be a fan of many whites especially SB's therefore NZ not much interest for me. the Martinborough region sounds interesting to me though with the characteristics of the wines do to the soils and weather. i will keep an eye out for NZ wines on my next trip to the wine stores. i definitely need to revisit wines i was not so found of in the past!

    What happened to New Zealand's other wine regions? Why no mention of Hawkes Bat, New Zealand's second largest wine region, and Otago with its Pinot Noir? Perhaps also Waiheke Island which is a 30 min ferry ride from down town Auckland.

  • This is a sad and very weedy tribute to NZ "If one were to consider NZ only worthy of Sauvignon Blanc", and then an acknowledgement that it produces Pinot Noir in Martinborough...

    Come on! NZ makes many excellent buttery chardonnays, subtle Shirazes, Cabernet/Merlot blends, Excellent Rieslings, viognier, Pinot Gris, and Gewurztraminer to rival those in Alsace.
    There are regions called Nelson and Hawkes Bay not even mentioned.
    Imagine foreigners describing California as fit only for Zinfandel and that is what this sounded like. And Im not even a kiwi!
