Is Wine Sexy in America?

A Look Back at Vintage Wine Advertisements

Heading back to the US, the following ad likely appeared in Life Magazine in 1941. The Wines of California ad depicts American Composer Deems Taylor declaring that “a good dinner calls for wine.” The ad includes tips on how to serve wine with a meal. Here wine is portrayed as sophisticated and elegant (and family friendly), not sexy, fun and provocative.

What a shame. There is no sexier beverage than red wine!

So if they say they plan to campaign to be more widely accepted, and already have a wholesome family friendly image, where can they go but to try to attract more younger beverage consumers?. And probably change to advertising with more sex-charged images.

  • Michelle, great article! I am surprised at the difference between US and European wine adverts.

Starting point for a US producer: not everyone drinks wine. We need to teach them that they should.
Starting point for an Italian producer: everyone drinks wine at home. Let's make it fun and sexy like beer and spirits to take it out of homes and restaurants and into the "entertainment" sphere.
