Irish Whiskey Shows Up In a Big Way at Ultimate Spirits Challenge

 


Welcome back to TheSpir.it with our tenth installment of the Ultimate Spirits Challenge 2012 coverage! This week’s category comes in the form of Irish Whiskey, which brought an incredibly large amount of entrants for the tasting. For Irish Whiskey, there were three categories that were judged: Blended Irish Whiskey, Pot Still Whiskey and Single Malt Irish Whiskey. Want to see who took the Chairman’s Trophy in each category? Midleton Barry Crockett Blended Irish Whiskey

Bushmills Black Bush Blended Irish Whiskey

“The nose explodes with scents of dried apricots, prunes, dates, sweet sherry, roasted nuts, almond brittle, mango, and a mélange of tropical notes. A rich, semi-viscous mid-palate that expands with notes of dark chocolate, treacle, and decadent fig preserves, in full agreement with the nose.”

“A very fragrant Whiskey with scents of fresh grass and spring flowers with touches of candied almonds, mango, and a faint coconut impression. The palate delivers on the promise of the nose being youthful while lush and generous with flavors of baked orchard fruits that become quite dry and a bit green on the finish.”

“Delicate while generous with the scents of crisp green apples, toasted grains, citrus, oak, and black pepper. the palate is vibrant and spicy with pepper notes gripping the semisweet malt and grain core.”

“The nose is rich and exotic with the scents of baked tropical fruits, honey, ginger, black currants, plum, nutmeg, and toffee, with hints of cinnamon, allspice, and pepper. Ideally balanced with a rich velvety core and a dry, oak filled finish.”
 

Jameson 12 Years Old Blended Irish Whiskey

“The nose is incredibly lush and complex offering waves of ripe oranges and tropical fruits with accents of caramel, toffee, cinnamon, vanilla, and Sherry. The palate is lush and full while clean and vibrant with baked orchard fruits and honey taking the lead. Long trailing secondary notes of bacon fat, toasted walnuts, and butterscotch linger on the finish.”
