2010 Harrison Clarke Grenache 14.8% $27

Inky on the nose with layers of floral, cinnamon spice and white pepper overtones to the gorgeous red fruit aromas that pop in the glass. This is bright tense and clear in the mouth with a gentle savory cast yet plump with red cranberry, currant, and strawberry flavors that are supported by a super juicy, gently tannic structure that lends a touch of chewiness to the palate. The finish has a fine zesty astringent edge and superb persistence to the finely focused fruit. 93pts

2011 Martian Ranch Vineyard Ground Control. Grenache Noir 12.9%

18 days carbonic, unsulfured

This is intensely aromatic with stemmy herb notes, meaty and earthy with medicinal herb accents that recall Angostura bitters over cherries jubilee! Perhaps a touch little soft on entry before the bright cranberry and wildberry fruit filled the mouth. This has lovely tension in the mouth and compelling inner mouth perfumes of crushed flowers and garrigue accenting the fruit. The tannins have mostly melted away here making this just a bit soft an easy in the mouth but this finishes with excellent length and a great bitter orange peel note on the finale. 91pts

2009 Harrison Clarke Sorellina Grenache 14.1% $22

10% syrah

On the nose this shows off gorgeous aromatics that are topped with floral notes and laced with hints of cinnamon and angelica root along with a real wild herb/garrigue element that helps highlight the raspberry, strawberry fruit. This is very fresh and lively in the mouth with juicy acids and lovely fruit tannins offering crisp, lively support to the core of strawberry fruit that picks up white pepper and mineral nuances on the backend and drives them through the clear, fruit driven finish. This shows lovely tension in the mouth. 91pts

2009 Tercero  Grenache Watch Hill 15%

Neutral oak for 30 months, 50% whole cluster

Smoky on the nose with a touch of leather, a little nuttiness, polleny and spicy with a hint of cinnamon but not a lot of fruit on the nose.  Bright on entry with pretty bright acids for such a big wine. Rich with deep wiry herb framed raspberry/wild strawberry fruit that fills the mouth, this is a little jammy on the palate but it never looses clarity nor balance. There's big follow through to the fruit on the backend with a bit of fine tannin emerging on the moderately long finish which shows just a hint astringency, 89pts

2009 Zaca Mesa Z Cuvée 14.5% $ 20

53% Grenache, 39% Mourvedre, 8% Syrah

A bit of raw oak marks this with a smoky and slightly balsamic note over a bit of Mourvedre beef jerky and dried beef, lots of violet, lots of wild blackberry and a hint of plum fruit. Bright yet powerful in the mouth with mouthwatering acidity and a nice base of supply yet dry tannins that lend clarity to the peach, raspberry, and wild cherry fruit on the mid palate.  A fine edge of strawberry lingers on the moderately long finish which shows off a little finesse and elegance. 89pts

2009 Tercero  Cuvée Christie 14.5%

In neutral oak for 42 months

65% Grenache, 15% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah, 10% Petite Sirah

Spicy, tarry and deep on the nose with a black cherry component, a little camphor, mineral and smoky limestone accents. While relatively lighter bodied, this exhibits lovely freshness and clarity of fruit on the palate showing nice complexity with sour cherry, wild strawberry and mineral flavors framed by spice notes and hints of old rose petal and herb stem. The tannin structure on the finish is supportive but well integrated adding a nice tea aspect with lovely mineral notes to the moderately long finish which does show a suggestion of heat. 89pts

2011 Stolpman Grenache 14.5%

Picked in Nov, 33% whole cluster

First vintage 2006, grown for close to 20 years but never fermented it by itself,

Mineral, even a bit steely on the nose which shows a red fruit profile with mild intensity over a savory base. This is quite big on entry, packed with savory tannins up front followed by rich candied Jolly Rancher raspberry/strawberry fruit, supported nicely by the tannins. The finish is long and shows off red fruits, with a dash of watermelon with those savory tannins serving to add interesting contrast. 89pts

2012 Martian Ranch Ranch Ground Control. Grenache Noir  13%

12 day carbonic

Very cherry fruited on the nose with attractive spice, earth and floral nuances all layered over a fine subtle dusty mineral base note,. This is light and fresh in the mouth, and perfectly transparent, with slightly astringent tannins adding some texture to the core of lovely raspberry and strawberry fruit that picks up some woodland spice notes on the backend and through the moderately long, refreshing finish. 88pts
