Great White Design

Cool wineries in Canada

Next » 1 of 7
Great White Design Okay, so it’s easy to turn cool design in Canada’s wine industry into a bad pun. But the truth is that the Canadians, blessed with a clean slate and gorgeous vistas, have put a lot of effort into the design of many of their wineries.

Of course, great winery design is not a prerequisite for great wine. It really has no influence on the wine, but it does have an influence on an emerging wine tourism industry.

While this may seem trite to some, the fact of the matter remains that feet on the ground for wineries can be as important as eyeballs for a website. We all need to attract a larger audience and help to create brand evangelists! Great design not only allows for impressive displays, but also creates the spaces needed for impressive events. Check out these five hot - I mean, cool - wineries and begin planning for visits!

  • Why not tell us EXACTLY where each winery is located. Canada is a big place you know.

All of them are in Southern Okanagan which is an easy 5 hour drive from Vancouver, British Columbia. Spectacular part of Canada.

I agree that the Nk'Mip winery is quite spectacular. Unfortunately, outrageous condo and resort development right next door has put a serious blemish on the once gorgeous site. Too bad!

Great write up! Though some of the new and upcoming wineries are pretty amazing as well, you managed to zero in on the main ones. Too bad about the typos though.

Years ago, circa 1979, we were in Vancouver and drank BC Still White. We'd hold up the glass and say "Yup, it's still white." That was about the highest praise it got.

In those days, the Canandians put any wine you'd ever heard about from anywhere in the world on a do not import list to protect their local wine industry. It needed it.

In answer to jmk94903...I don't know where you get your information from...but even in the late 70's I'm pretty sure there was no 'do not import' list to, as you say, 'protect the local wine industry'. That's just not the way things get done in Canada. Canadian wineries (both in BC and in Ontario) have never been able to produce a sufficient amount of wine to answer Canadians' needs...and still don't. I do agree that in the 70's, a lot of Canadian wines were pretty awful...some still are. But they've made great strides since then and some of the wineries can compete with almost anything being done elsewhere...and, of course, who can beat the fabulous Canadian Ice wines???? And how many have had the unbelievable pleasure of tasting Ice cider from Quebec???? If you haven't...you don't really know what you're missing!

Am curious if the NK'Mip building takes hints from indigenous housing design, or instead from American SouthWest design (both aboriginal and Spanish)?

Who did the research for the article, Greg? Interesting, but a bit of a light teaser. As mentioned above it would've been nice to have more detail, not only on location but on winery functionality, including more photos.

    Cheers

Great to see an article about winery design. Perhaps in a future article you could provide more images of each project. There are some interesting ones in Ontario too.

I live in Ontario Wine Country (Niagara) and I can also confirm that Canada does not equal British Columbia. Our favorite thing to do on a Sunday is to take a short drive and visit a winery or two for a tasting. We are very lucky to live in this area! It is not to be missed or you miss out!!!
