Tasting a bit of history: Bordeaux(ish) blends

 


Working on my New Year’s resolution to clean up the cellar I was able to put together this small group of roughly Bordeaux influenced wines to taste. More a grouping based on price, there being wines with majorities, a plurality, and a dash of Syrah in the mix, these are wines that for whatever reason didn’t make it to the tasting board last year.
 
Four of the wines come from South Africa, a region that doesn’t get the attention it deserves. While my top choices here came from Napa Valley and Yakima Valley, the next two wines both came from South Africa, and both were less expensive than the two highest scoring wines. They offer a real choice for today’s consumer. Wines that are less fruit driven and more complex than many of their counterparts.
