Great Gifts for Geeks

What all the cool kids are drinking this year

Now we are getting into the Geek wines du jour. The Jura has taken its rightful place among the world’s great wines over the last few years as the wines have won over  opinion leaders the world round. They fall somewhere halfway between the previous wines, rich yet light with funky flavors, and the wines that follow: oxidative, crisp and complex. In truth they are rather obscure and difficult to find and they will remain that way. The vineyards of the Jura are not expansive and the supply of these wines will always remain modest. The region produces both white and reds wines though I have found the reds to be generally more interesting. The Vin Jaune, the oxidized white, is a unique and unusual wine worth exploring but it will have a limited appeal.
So while I generally prefer the reds from the Jura any discussion of these wines has to include Bourdy’s Blanc. It’s inexpensive, a Chardonnay of all things, gently oxidized as well. But in the glass it is a revelation full of hazelnuts, dried lemons, chalk, and hints of sweet orchard fruits. It ages effortlessly and seems to gain weight and freshness with age!
