While I'm no stranger to the Big Easy having lived there for several years and cooked in the French Quarter for one of them, I can't say I've ever been to an event quite like Tales of the Cocktail.
Dismissing for the moment certain aspects of the timing and that 90 degree temperature and 90 percent humidity are not ideal cocktailing weather, it would be hard to find a better venue than New Orleans to celebrate the glory of the American bar scene. After all, our bar scene today is one that draws from around the globe, and if any city in the U.S. is more global than American, get on down to New Orleans and you'll be looking at it.
I'm heading down for a great virtual tasting with George Sandeman of the eponymous Porto house. We'll be talking about all things Porto; history, styles, the latest vintages, as well as unveiling two new Porto cocktails to our audience. That all happens Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. EST. You can view it live on Snooth! RSVP here to be sure not to miss it.
Thursday is a bit of a free day for me, I'm not really participating with Tales but plan on connecting with quite a few friends who will be down there. If anyone is going to be in town and wants to meet up, let me know. I would love to share a Pimm's Cup in Napoleon House or something entirely more corrosive at Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop, I'm just saying…
Thursday night I'm sad to say that I'll be missing Sandeman's dinner, at Arnaud's of all places! It looks to be a grand event pairing Porto cocktails with some of the classic dishes off the menu. You can check out the menu here: The Lost Art of port with George Sandeman, though remember it is sold out. I'll be looking for another venue for dinner I guess! Got any suggestions?
I hope to meet some of you down there. Keep your eye out for my colleague Sara Kay, editor of TheSpir.it, who will be attending Tales and even hosting a seminar, Caorunn Gin's Storytellers Challenge. It looks like an event you don't want to miss and you get to meet Sara, so take some time to check it out.
If you do attend this year's Tales of the Cocktail, we would love to hear your best stories. Please come back and share! And let Sara and myself know if you have time to say hello. By the way, I bet you five dollars I know where you got your shoes!
See ya'll soon!
