Flavored spirits are an incredible market to me. Any flavor, literally, can make its way into a bottle, then onto a store shelf, and no matter how bizarre or questionable that flavor is, it will sell out in no time. Traditionally, I tend to shy away from flavored spirits, mostly because I find them to be too sweet and not very original. But this month I have been presented with some pretty incredible flavored delicacies that I would feel morally wrong not sharing with all of you.
So what’s in store For the Tasting today? Some pretty incredible stuff. Mama Walker’s, a relatively new liqueur brand, has released some expressions that definitely raise the bar when it comes to interesting flavor ideas. Maple Bacon, Glazed Donut and Blueberry Pancake are the newest releases, and if you are reading those three flavors and thinking ‘now how the heck am I going to use those in my everyday drinking life?’ you’d be amazed at the cocktail recipes that accompany each bottle. They are remarkable, and dangerously so.

For good measure, I’ve thrown in a couple new spirits that don’t fall into the ‘what the-’ flavor category. Tequila Avion Espresso liqueur, and Pike Creek Canadian Whisky, aged in port barrels, will round out our For the Tasting this month. Get ready for some interesting products today people, because we are definitely pushing the boozy envelope this time around. Be sure to get out and grab a couple of these new products and try them for yourself, and let us know what you think. Cheers!
Mama Walker’s Maple Bacon Liqueur- Incredibly viscous in the glass, this liqueur has a lot of thickness to it. Very sweet on the nose with a lot of maple and sugar, but no meatiness on the nose. A serious sting in the nose. Definitely some burn to this, but the flavor is not overly sweet. Definitely tastes like candied bacon, with a slight meatiness but not overpowering. The flavor of maple syrup and bacon lingers for a few minutes, but leaves the creamy, sugary feeling around for longer.
Cocktail Recipe: Mama Said What?
2 parts Maple Bacon Liqueur
1 part Jameson Irish Whiskey
Shake with ice in a cocktail shaker and strain into chilled shot glasses.
Mama Walker’s Glazed Donut Liqueur- Has the same viscocity as the first liqueur, but not nearly as much burn on the nose. Has the aroma of vanilla cake frosting, incredibly sugary sweet. Definitely getting a baked cake scent on the nose as well, with some molasses. This reminds me more of a vanilla liqueur and less like a ‘glazed donut.’ Not entirely sure the name of this liqueur matches the flavors inside, but it isn’t bad for a vanilla liqueur.
Cocktail Recipe: Mama’s Jelly Donut
1 ½ parts Glazed Donut Liqueur
½ part ABSOLUT Raspberri
Shake ingredients with ice in a cocktail shaker. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
Mama Walker’s Blueberry Pancake Liqueur- Lots of blueberries and maple syrup on the nose right away. Also getting notes of blackberries and raspberries. Again, not nearly as much burn on the nose as the first liqueur. Not really sure how the pancake element is included in here; the flavor is rich with blueberries and maple but the cake element is not present. Slightly jammy and with a creamy mouthfeel, this flavor sticks around for a few minutes before transforming to the flavor of pure maple syrup.
Cocktail Recipe: Mama’s Lemonade
2 parts Blueberry Pancake Liqueur
4 parts Lemonade
Pour liqueur and lemonade over ice in a highball glass.
Tequila Avion Espresso Liqueur- Extremely viscous in the glass with an incredible body. The aroma reminds me of walking into a good coffee shop in Brooklyn and getting a fresh, hot shot of espresso. The flavor of the tequila is present but not overpowering the espresso. The flavor is incredible; the soft sweetness of the silver tequila mixes perfectly with the espresso, resulting in a creamy and tangy sip. I could sip this with an ice cube or two, or take it as a shot.
Pike Creek Whisky- Beautiful amber color in the glass. This has some body to it, with a blackberry sweetness on the nose. Apricots, peaches and almonds are present, as well as notes of vanilla and caramel. In the mid-palate there is some butterscotch and wood. The flavor here lingers for a while, and I wish it would stick around for longer. Very sippable.
