Over the years, the proliferation of Napa Valley Cabernets, and their steadily rising prices (not to mention the drive towards over-the-top styles) have made finding a classic example a real challenge. Thankfully, there are still some wines out there that wow us, and while you might have to sift through many wines to find the one, when you do find it, it is bound to be special. The 2007 Altvs Cabernet Sauvignon is one of those wines -- the rare Napa Valley Cabernet that delivers all it promises and more and, coming from the exceptional 2007 vintage, no less!
While many Cabernets these days have traded power for complexity and absolute ripeness for pure varietal character, the 2007 Altvs Cabernet Sauvignon is the rare wine that manages to knit together all these elements to produce a rich, lush wine that incorporates lovely toasty nuances as an accent to its bright, complex fruit profile. This truly is an outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon and, with its fine pedigree, that really should come as no surprise!
The 2007 Altvs Napa Valley Cabernet is produced using the finest fruit the valley has to offer. Distinct plots, and even specific rows, from some of the finest vineyard sites in Napa Valley have been artfully blended to create a wine with uncommon complexity. Very focused on the nose with lively aromas of black currant, a hint of chipotle, superbly integrated wood spice and lovely top notes of powdered cocoa, pipe tobacco and briarwood, and a touch of mineral. Enters the mouth with a really fresh profile: the acid is front and center, adding brightness to the fruit. This is a big wine but it’s not weighty. There are ample tannins to support ageing and today they are a touch prominent at first, but this has great balance and really cleanses the palate. The fruit, touched with cinnamon and rich with cassis, is pure and almost delicate at first, but has great persistence on the finish with a light underlay of wood spice that offers fine support. The fruit is sweet on the mid-palate but the wine is decidedly dry. A very impressive Napa Cabernet that is ripe without being over-the-top. This wants a nice 45-day dry aged rib-eye about three inches thick! 93pts
