It's not going to surprise anyone to see that New Zealand is currently in both the number one and two spots here. What might be surprising is seeing the Fume Blanc, California's own incarnation of Sauvignon Blanc, making a move. Slow and steady, can Chateau St. Jean make up the ground?
Premium Italian Reds
Okay, this one does surprise me, even though it shouldn't. Every statistic I've seen has told me that the red wines of the Veneto are super popular in the U.S., but I just don't see it. Yet, here they are in first, third and fourth place. Zaccagnini, the red wine with the grape vine attached, is spoiling the Veneto party, but for how long?
Super Premium Italian Whites
If the Veneto dominating the Premium Italian Red category wasn't enough, Friuli is making a statement in this one. I love the two wines in third and fourth places, but can a top-end Gavi and great Gewurzt really challenge the two Friulians? Is Jermann running a blocking maneuver? Can this be any more exciting? Don't answer that.
Super Premium Red Dessert Wines
And finally, we come to some dessert wines. Sandeman Portos are running first and third, a powerhouse to be reckoned with. But, what's this? Zeni Moscato from Trentino is making a play for first? Can it be? This might just be the first great upset of the Snooth People's Voice Awards! Who are you going to vote for?
