Dona Paula's Virtual Tasting Recap

Talking terroir with Martin Kaiser

Last month we had our most recent Virtual Tasting featuring the wines of Argentina’s Dona Paula Estate. While tasting through four wines we were treated to Martin Kaiser’s narratives. Matin, as the head viticulturist for Dona Paula, is intimately involved in the development and maintenance of each vineyard. His unique insight into the terroir of Dona Paula’s unique set of premium vineyards helped to explain the character of each wine in a detailed and intuitive way. Here are some of the highlights of our time together!

Dona Paula

We kicked off our 2013-2014 Virtual Tasting season by featuring Martin Kaiser, Dona Paula's chief viticulturist. We begin with Matin by discussing where Mendoza, Dona Paula's home base, is and how it's position affects the wines that they produce. Mendoza is warm and dry, and this climate has helped the development of the region's wine industry.

2012 Dona Paula Chardonnay Estate

Coming from the Finca Alluvia vineyard, this rather unusual Chardonnay is barrel fermented then aged half in a mix of new and used barrels and half in stainless steel. It does not undergo malolactic fermentation so it remains zesty and bright, and very representative of it's terroir. Listen in as Martin describes the soil composition and other factors that come into play when producing Chardonnay.

The conditions for producing top Chardonnay differ format hose need for world class Torrontes. Joins us as Martin describes the conditions in Salta, arguably the greatest terroir for Torrontes in the world.
