Day Tripping: Livermore

Getting away for a day, just an hour outside San Francisco

Page Mill

I have to admit that I had lost track of Page Mill over the years. Known, at least by me, for their attractive Santa Barbara Pinot noirs, the entire winery moved from Santa Cruz to Livermore 11 years ago. Since then the winery has remained small, but has come to focus on Livermore fruit for nearly all of their needs.

A small scale family run operation, Page Mill is an intimate and welcoming operation. Its sits in contrast to the bigger polished operations like Wente both in the vibe as well as the wines produced. Case in point, their 2010 Page Mill Petite Sirah Estate Vineyard is rich, and complex with an old school quality to it. It feels hand made and reflects the state of Livermore today. A blend of the new and the old producing something that is comfortable and just so easy to like!

You picked the LAST wineries I would visit in my hometown. What should have been on the list is Occasio, Steven Kent, 3 Steves, Nottingham Cellars, Bent Creek, and La Rochelle for starters. I would pass on Wente, and Page Mill makes some of the worst wine I've tasted!

True to their heritage, Wente has produced a long string of late harvest wines. Their long gone hand written label wines from Monterey are still alive in their Late Harvest 2010 Riesling. It is a tremendous wine and the reason I still go back.

  • I'm so glad Page Mill made the cut! I have enjoyed their wines since they moved to Livermore.

Ouch Napagirl! I was trying to show the range of wines available from Livermore. Looks like at least one Snoother likes the page mill wines!

Hey everybody, wine is so subjective what I like you my not.
That said why not go 20 mile north and check out the wineries in contra costa county.
Or go thru the tunnel and check out the urban guys.
    Cheers to all
