Day Tripping: Livermore

Getting away for a day, just an hour outside San Francisco

Day Tripping: Livermore Barely an hour east of San Francisco lies the relatively undiscovered, and unspoiled wine region of the Livermore Valley. Historically home to a vibrant wine industry, the region has had its ups and downs over the years, emerging only recently with a reinvigorated approach to wine. A number of reasons came into play when one considers why Livermore has not maintained a more prominent role in California’s wine industry, and I go into those in some detail here Looking at Livermore, but I just wanted to take a moment to share with you just a few images and impressions from my recent visit to the area.

Next time you find yourself in or around San Francisco with a free afternoon consider visiting Livermore. It’s an emerging wine region and as such it has the vibe of a place where things are being discovered. Where people are taking risks and having some fun while they’re at. Sure there are some established players, Concannon and Wente being the best known, but the region is also full of smaller guys, making some impressive wines, and trying to figure things out on their own terms. Which makes for a fun visit, even if you're a jaded wine professional like me!

You picked the LAST wineries I would visit in my hometown. What should have been on the list is Occasio, Steven Kent, 3 Steves, Nottingham Cellars, Bent Creek, and La Rochelle for starters. I would pass on Wente, and Page Mill makes some of the worst wine I've tasted!

True to their heritage, Wente has produced a long string of late harvest wines. Their long gone hand written label wines from Monterey are still alive in their Late Harvest 2010 Riesling. It is a tremendous wine and the reason I still go back.

  • I'm so glad Page Mill made the cut! I have enjoyed their wines since they moved to Livermore.

Ouch Napagirl! I was trying to show the range of wines available from Livermore. Looks like at least one Snoother likes the page mill wines!

Hey everybody, wine is so subjective what I like you my not.
That said why not go 20 mile north and check out the wineries in contra costa county.
Or go thru the tunnel and check out the urban guys.
    Cheers to all
