Dispatches from Italy

Video briefs with some of Piedmont's most influential winemakers.

Restart 1 of 1
Dispatches from Italy Spending a couple of weeks in Italy may not seem like work, but in my case I can assure you I am here to ferret out the best wines of the vintages on offer, trying to give you all a preview of the wines that will hit our shelves soon, as well as another set of notes on wines that might be of interest to you.

Of course taking my word on these things can be a bit dicey, after all I don't get to spend a ton of time with most of these wines, but there is a way to give you even more information about the wines, letting you speak with the producers.

So that's what I've set out to do. Where I can I've been interviewing winemakers here in Piedmont, getting them to tell us what their region means to them, and what they hope their vineyards express. I'll be adding to this article daily, making this a running commentary on the wines I'v tasted and I hope it's helpful for you.

Please forgive the shaky video, I'm shooting this on an old Flip cam and have only rudimentary editing capabilities!

Haha. The interviews are fun. Thanks. I spent some time in the Piedmont region in 2009 and my two favourite wines were: 1) out of a juice box at a hiking refuge; and 2) the house wine at Catello di Pavone. I never got to find out which winery they were from but I remember the flavours well. Yes. The hand gestures do say it all.
