Cool Off with Kölsch This Summer

5 Great Examples of this Refreshing Summer Beer

Captains Kölsch

Captain Lawrence Brewing Co., Elmsford, New York

Captain Lawrence was one of the early adopters of Kölsch style in America. It was certainly one of the first that I tried aside from Gaffel. The brewery had been concentrating on brewing ales but the Kölsch was the first beer they made that's not exactly considered an ale. The Captain's variation has only a very mild hop bitterness but the rich malt flavors balance it perfectly. The crispness you'd expect from a Kölsch is certainly there as well, making this a refreshing option. (Especially considering how hot it's been in New York this summer!)

This article is the biggest load of BS ever. Why you ask. For one Kolsch... real Kolsch can only come from KOLN, Germany, just like Champagne and Burgundy can only come from their respective regions. Snooth should do some research before spewing articles that make no sense and just make them look silly. This list should be Gaffel, Reisdorf, Sunner, and Fru all of which are from Koln. SMH

  • Hey Wortsup -- thanks for the comment. I actually did point that out in the opening paragraph. While yes, the Kolsch convention does state that Kolsch can only come from Koln, the style of beer has caught on with a lot of domestic breweries. Thanks again -- hope you keep reading.

Interestingly, just had a "Kolsch-style" beer from Alaska Brewing on my return trip from Alaska (on Alaska Airlines, of course!). Quite decent!
