South Africa being in Africa and all, can be expected to have some pretty balmy temperatures, which is true but it’s also true that those ocean currents right off the coast sweep up a lot of cold Antarctic air, leaving the country with a fairy short growing season and generally temperate clime, perfect for refreshing wines. That being said, there seems to be a major effort on South African winemakers’ part to force their wines into being something that they may not be, not surprising for a region that is struggling to be recognized for their great potential. On the other hand, some of their wines (I’m talking about Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc in particular) are difficult to force and this reflects the nature of their environments with their fresh and friendly nature. Perfect for chilling by the pool and still particularly affordable!
