Cheap Pinot Noir Wines

Finding the gems

2010 Woodbridge by Robert Mondavi Pinot Noir California 13% $8

Stemmy and lightly smoky with cranberry and smoldering herbs on the nose. Bright yet a touch sweet on entry, with simple yet clean red fruit flavors accented with the stemmy smoldering note of the nose. The finish is a touch sticky, though the fruit gains a little more depth, adding some nice plum and dried citrus peel/clementine notes. This is a bit clunky, the tannins being a bit tough, but it’s well made and defect-free. Totally unremarkable but offers good value. 84pts

Thank you, Greg. I'm sure I can find some of these at the local purveyor.

  • Unlike other Chilean Pinots I tasted (some of them claiming much higher status like Reserva, Special Selection etc.) this one stands out to advantage: strict in character, crisp and balanced in taste, and strangely no that nasty heavy sulphitic bouquet the Chilean mass-market wines are so notorious for

HA! You'll have to wait for $35-$50 International Pinots before I get around to them. Love the Hamilton Russel but have to admit to having never tasted the Bouchard Finlayson. I'll keep a watch out for it though. Thanks for the tip!
