Great bottles of the real deal

NV Taittinger Brut La Francaise 12%

Very yeasty, dry and apply on the nose, with some vanilla and floral top notes. Energetically effervescent, but not distracting in the mouth. This shows a soft balance. While it has good acids, the wine is a little diffuse on the palate with modest apple and chalk elements plus a steely edge. That steely edge drives the finish, which shows nice finesse but is rather light, as this is from front to back. Rather elegant and refined, if delicate. 88pts

  • Greg-
For those of us who do not live in NYC, how about rating the Moet & Chandon, Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin, Mumms Mouton Rouge and a few other personal favorites? In reading your column, I did not find some of my common choices even mentioned. I like to learn, but if you don't give me a solid reference frame, I am disappointed. I'm fine with your Bollinger, Taittinger, Laurent Perrier ratings. Perhaps, I expect too much and these are enough for a good comparison. Happy New Year.
