The $20 price point for California Cabernets is neither inexpensive nor expensive, but in order to get a good wine for $20, you have to either find the producers with scale or the producers who got in cheaply. I found some great Cabernets from Paso Robles which I reported on yesterday. They are taking advantage of the lower price of land and grapes down there. With this selection though, it’s all about volume.
Yes these are some big producers, but who is better equipped than the big guys to produce real value? They have the means, the machines, and the experience, so don’t be surprised by the quality you’re going to find in many of these bottles.
