I am having trouble knowing what these terms mean, even after reading Greg's descriptions of different Bordeaux vintage styles. What's the difference between ripe and opulent, for instance?

The way I use the terms a ripe vintage has fresh fruit character while still retaining good, fresh tannins and noticeable acidity.

Opulent on the other hand trades some of the acid and tannin for more fruit sweetness and a plusher, softer texture. I hope that helps.
