Top Spanish Roses

Our favorites for August

Top Spanish Roses Spanish rosés have always been an important part of the rosé world and are becoming even more so, which should not be surprising when one considers that the Spaniards are the world’s greatest consumers of rosé.

Given the country's wide selection of wines and the really compelling pricing for so many of them, it seems like an obvious conclusion. What may be surprising to many people, though, is the sheer number of Spanish rosés and the range of regions and styles. This week’s tasting featured several standouts, such as the 2010 Protocolo, which is a steal, and the always irresistible and unusual Tondonia Rosado Gran Reserva.

Do winemakers take Rose seriously enough? Too many, it seems, use it as a way of dealing to inferior fruit and getting quick cash flow. YET, done well it can be superb. So encouraging to read about the Tondonia Gran Reserve and some of the new premium labels from Provence like Petal. Here in New Zealand The Hay Paddock has launched a cold fermented syrah which they call Silk Rose and it is absolutely free of residual sugar. Let's encourage the winemakers to lift their sights.

I have to tell you that I recently received a case of Rose from Wine Selectors as a gift for having a letter published in their magazine and Myself and my partner have been thoroughly enjoying the odd drop of Wirra Wirra Mrs Wigley's 2010 Moscato or her Grenache Rose. I have not been a fan of Rose but must say that i have been very impressed with these two

Great comments, thanks for taking the time. I think that many producers take rose seriously enough, the question might be do consumers take rose seriously enough.
This year's crop, at least those wines that I've been fortunate enough to taste, have been mostly quite good. The quality seems to continue to riseand the number of options in the marketplace has certainly exploded in recent years. I have a handful of wines left to taste, all Grenache based, so I look forward to wrapping up this summer's rose tastings with some of the classics from France, Spain, and the New World!
