Best Grenache Roses
So I’ve been talking about Grenache this week, and while I’ve found some lovely wines that I truly enjoyed, I simply don’t get very excited about most Grenache. At least not excited enough to buy the wines, with the rare exceptions. One of those exceptions is rosé.
Now I am going to anger so many of you out there and I’m sorry, but I’m just speaking my mind when I say I can’t think of any better use for Grenache than turning it into a rosé. Now before you attack me for such a backhanded compliment, try some of these wines. I mean, Tavel. Hello? They’re not screwing around there and ALL they do is make rosé out of mostly Grenache!
My big beef with Grenache is that the wines tend to be big, yet a bit hollow. By making them smaller, they fill out nicely and highlight the best of the variety, spicy/herby red fruits, while dispensing with the worst: high alcohol and modest structure. This set of rosés was my favorite of this year’s crop and each one is worth seeking out.
